A training program for neighborhood-based volunteers to properly
care for mature and newly planted trees. Graduates have
successfully led volunteer projects which help to restore lost
canopy. The sessions include: the benefits of trees; physiology
of trees; insects and tree disease; urban soils; proper panting;
green laws’ pruning and caring for trees. 6 hours of classroom
instruction and 6 hours of field instruction are offered at no
charge and are required for certification in return for 12 hours
of volunteer service on tree-related projects. This Citizen
Forester program was initiated by the United States Department
of Agriculture through the Louisiana Department of Agriculture &
Forestry and there are over 125 graduates in Jefferson Parish,
with satellite programs in Orleans, St. Tammany and other
parishes.
